As generations become more and more dependent on technology and screens, fewer people are making the effort to educate themselves on environmental issues. News outlets have become less reliable and accessible, and many aren’t interested enough to read long articles on global warming, filled to the brim with statistics. However, there is an easy, accessible way to stay educated and aware of the many dangers presented to our world: watching movies! There are hundreds of powerful environmental movies, spanning many genres. You may have even seen some without realizing the undertones of environmental advocacy!

Erin Brockovich

This Julia Roberts classic is both hilarious and incredibly powerful. Based on a true story, Erin Brockovich is about a single mom who takes a job as a legal clerk and fights a big corporate company on their contaminated water cover-up. It’s a beautifully executed film, demonstrating that everyone can make an impact on saving the environment.

Wall-E

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning this beloved Pixar classic. Wall-E takes place in an apocalyptic future, where the world has been obliterated due to climate change and pollution. It gives us a look into a bleak future that could easily come to fruition if nothing is done to stop it, all while staying kid-friendly and entertaining.

Okja

From the director of the award-winning Parasite, Okja is a thoughtful film about a genetically modified pig named Okja, and the evil corporation who wants to exploit her. It covers the abuse of resources and animal rights, but simultaneously includes the sweet relationship between Okja and her young female owner.

The Lorax

Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax may be an unexpected addition to this list. However, this animated favorite showcases the dangers of deforestation and exploiting natural resources. Throughout the film, the Lorax encourages the people of Thneedville to realize the true value of nature, as Seuss attempted to do through this story.

Don’t Look Up

This film, with its star-studded cast and unusual storyline, might be the most bold with its message about climate change. Don’t Look Up is the story of two astronomers who discover that a meteor is going to strike Earth and obliterate it within six months. They do their best to warn the people, but no one seems to believe them or care. The satirical film seems extreme at first glance, but it truly reflects the real world’s reaction to, and lack of action against, our ongoing climate crisis.
